Our Library
The characteristics of the members of Ruyterwacht Senior Centre are that they:
are underprivileged;
are lonely;
require support in the form of
personal care;
require personal and spiritual guidance;
experience health problems;
feel the need for socializing with others in
their own peer group;
feel the need to develop their own creativity;
consider human dignity to be of importance;
An analysis of the composition of the RSC members reveals that:
The average age of members is over
65 years;
The only income of 98% of our members come from government old age pension (SASSA).
Only 2% has an income more than
R3 000-00 p.m. (i.e. private pension)
In order to obtain our goals, the following services are rendered:
2 meetings per week for socializing with peer group and educational talk on a variety of appropriate topics (with average attendance of 200 persons per meeting;
Subsidized meals 5 x per week;
Health services, e.g. blood pressure clinic and feet care clinic;
Library service;
Subsidized transport to and from meetings, as well as to and from hospitals and clinics;
Hare care;
Management of 6 boarding houses, in which, at present, 37 destitute older persons are cared for;
Opportunity to take part in cultural activities, e.g. choir, celebrating of special days, etc.;
Arts & Crafts group;
Sport & recreation;
Outings;
Second hand clothes, as well as Bric & Brac, shops;
Providing of food parcels during Christmas holidays.
