Tienie van Zyl (83) - a member of Ruyterwacht Senior Centre - has always loved walking.
In 1952 he joined Bellville Athletics Club (he is still their oldest ACTIVE member), and completed his first marathon (42km) in 1958. His did last full marathon only a few days before his 80th birthday!
During his career, Tienie took part in many marathons, and even ultra-marathons. He also took part in the Veteran World Games In 1983.
After surviving his first heart attach 22 years ago, Tienie went through a heart bypass operation, a number of stents, and his fourth pacemaker. 7 years ago, his heart function was between 9% and 16%. Despite this, he maintained his training programme to keep fit for walking.
Nowadays Tienie mostly walks for fun, but wants to complete a half-marathon (21km) annually as a fundraising project for the feeding scheme of Ruyterwacht Senior Centre.
This year, the event takes place on May 16th.
